THE HANFI WAY TO PERFORM NAMAAZ

Being in a state of wudu, stand facing the Kabah with minimal distance (a few centimetres only) between your feet. Stand in a normal position looking only at the place of sajda. Then make the intention (niyat) for the Namaaz you will be praying e.g. for two rakaats farz Namaaz for Fajr, 'I intend to pray two rakaats farz Namaaz for Fajr, facing the direction of Kabah, for Allah Ta'ala'.

If you are praying in a congregation (jamaat), then add 'behind this imaam' before saying 'for Allah Ta'ala'.

Taqbeer e Tahreema and Qiyam

By saying Allaahu Akbar (taqbeer e tahreema) raise both hands and touch your ear lobes with your thumbs, and then lower your hands and place them below your umbilicus (navel). Put your right palm on the back of your left wrist joint with the three middle fingers on the back of your left forearm and your thumbs and small finger on either side of your wrist.

For women, they should raise their both hands up to their shoulders and should not take them out of her overall or shawl. She should fold hands over her chest and place her palms one upon the back of the other.

For demonstration only. The hands at all times should be under the shawl

Then recite thana:

Subhaana kal-laahum-ma

Wa bihamdika

Wa tabaara-kas muka

Wa ta 'Aala Jad-duka

Wa laa Ilaaha Ghaierrukh

Glory is to You O Allah Ta'ala. I recite Your praise, Blessed is Your name, You are the most exalted and none is worthy of worship besides You.

Then recite the ta'awwuz:

A-oozu Bil-laahi

Minash-shaitaan nir Rajeem

I seek the protection of Allah Ta'ala from the cursed shaitaan.

Then recite tasmiyah:

Bismil-laahir Rahmaan nir Raheem

In the name of Allah Ta'ala, The Most Compassionate, The Most Merciful

Then recite Surah Fateha:

Al-Hamdu Lil-Laahi Rab-bil 'Aalameem, Ar-Rahma nir-Raheem, Maa liki Yaumid-deen , Iiyaaka Na'budu Wa Iiy-yaak Nasta'een, Ihdinas-Siraatal Mustaqeema Siraatal-Lazeena An'amta 'Alaiehim, Ghaieril Maghdoobi 'Alaiehim Wa Lad-daal-leen.

All praise be unto Allah. Lord of all the worlds. The Most Affectionate, the Merciful

Master of The day of Requital. We worship You alone and beg You alone for help.

Guide us on the straight path. The path of those whom You have favoured. Not those who have earned Your anger and nor of those who have gone astray.

Then recite Aameen silently in your heart. (not verbally)

Then recite any of the verse of The Holy Quran e.g. Surah Ikhlaas:

Qul Huwal-laahu Ahad. Allaahus-Samad. Lam Yalid, Wa Lam Yoolad. Wa Lam Yakul-Lahu Kufu wan Ahad.

Say, He is Allah, the one. Allah is above and beyond all dependence. He does not beget, nor is He begotten. And there is none to whom He can be likened

Ruku

Then while saying Allaahu Akbar, bow down into ruku. Keeping your fingers spread out, hold your knees firmly with both palms, putting pressure on your hands. Keep your back straight to the extent that the head and back are at level with each other-the back being parallel to the ground. Do not bend the legs from the knee.

For women, they should bow down to a lesser extent than men, just to place her hands lightly on the knees-without holding them. The fingers have to be kept close together, unlike men who keep their fingers spread out. The knees should only be slightly bent, unlike men who do not bend the legs from the knees.

Then recite at least three times (three, five, seven '):

Subhaana Rab-biyal 'Azeem-How glorious is Allah, The Greatest

Then while saying tasmee, Sami Al-Laahu Liman Hamidah- Allah has listened to him who has praised Him, raise yourself to stand up again. If praying in a congregation (jamaat), then only the imaam will say tasmee aloud.

Qaumah

The standing after rising from ruku is called qaumah. Let your hands remain on the sides and continue the standing position, and recite tahmeed, Rab-banaa Lakal Hamd-O Allah! All praise is due to You alone.

Sajda

Then while saying Allaahu Akbar, go into sajda by first placing the knees firmly on the ground, then both the hands, and then the head-the nose first and then the forehead. The face has to be put inbetween both the hands. Preferably, look at your nose while in sajda. The male should keep the arms separated from the sides. However, if praying in a congregation, then the arms should be kept close to the body-so that the people next to you are not inconvenienced. The abdomen should not touch the thighs, and the thighs should not touch the calf muscles-the back muscles between the knee and the heels. The wrist and the elbows should not touch the ground. The soles (inside) of all the ten toes should be firmly set on the ground with the fingers facing the qibla.

For women, they should draw or curdle their full body together. They should join their abdomen with their thighs and the thighs should be joined with the calf muscles. The shins-the front of the legs below the knees should touch the ground. The hands should be spread out on the ground. The wrist and the elbow should touch the ground. The feet should point backwards. In qa'dah, the feet should be pointing towards the right.

Then recite at least three times (three, five, seven') tasbeeh e sajda:

Subhaana Rab-biyal A'laa

Glorified is Allah, The Most High

Jalsa

Then while saying Allaahu Akbar, rise from sajda in such a way that first the forehead, then the nose, and then the hands are raised, and sit on the left foot. The right foot should be upright- perpendicular to the ground while the toes face the qibla. The palms should be placed on the thighs, near the knees in a manner that the fingers face the qibla. The fingers should neither be separated nor closely approximated.

This sitting in-between the two sajdas is called jalsa. One must stay in this position for at least the amount of time it takes to say Subhan Allah.

Then by saying Allaahu Akbar, perform the second sajda.

Then stand up while saying Allaahu Akbar, lifting your head, then the palms, and then your knees, placing your palms on your knees as you get up. Now complete the second rakaat.

Standing in qiyam, Recite Bismil-laahir Rahmaan nir Raheem, Surah Fateha and another surah of The Holy Quran.

Take note that if you are praying in a congregation, behind an imaam, then the followers (muqtadi) should not recite Bismil-laahir Rahmaan nir Raheem, Surah Fateha, or any other surah. You must stand remaining silent.

Then perform ruku and sajda as it was done in the first rakaat.

Qa'dah

After completing the two sajda of the second rakaat, sit in the same position as you sat in-between the two sajda in the first rakaat. This sitting in the second sajda in the second rakaat is called qa'dah.

Then recite tashahhud in qa'dah:

At-tahiy-yaatu Lil-Laahi Was-Sala waatu Wat-taiey-yibaat, As-Salaamu 'Alaieka Aie-yuhan-Na-bee-yu Wa Rahmatul-Laahi Wa Barakaatuh, As-Salaamu 'Alaienaa Wa 'Alaa 'Ibaadil-Laahis-Saaliheen, Ash-hadu Al-laa Ilaaha Il-lal Laahu wa Ash-hadu An-na Muhammadun 'Abduhu Wa Rasooluh.

All reverence, all worship and all glory is due to Allah alone. Peace be on you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and on those who are the righteous servants of Allah. I testify that none is deserving of being worshipped except Allah Ta'ala, and I testify that Prophet Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.

If you are praying more than two rakaat, then while saying Allaahu Akbar, stand up after reciting tashahhud in the second rakaat. For a four rakaat Namaaz, after the second sajda of third rakaat, you don't have to sit for tashahhud. Stand up straight after the second sajda.

For Farz Namaaz, in the third and fourth rakaat, recite Bismil-laahir Rahmaan nir Raheem and Surah Fateha only. Do not recite an additional surah. However, for a sunnat or nafil Namaaz, another surah must be recited after Surah Fateha in the third and the fourth rakaat.

The remaining actions must be performed the same as before.

Qa'dah e Akheerah

After completing your second rakaat (for two rakaat Namaaz), or third rakaat (for three rakaat Namaaz) or the fourth rakaat (for four rakaat Namaaz), sit in qa'dah e akheerah (last sitting), recite tashahhud, durood shareef, and invocation (dua).

Durood Shareef in qa'dah e akheerah:

Al-Laahum-ma Sal-li 'Alaa Saiey-yidinaa Muhammadin-Wa 'Alaa Aali Saiey-yidinaa Muhammadin Kamaa Sal-laieta 'Alaa Ibraaheema Wa 'Alaa Aali Ibraaheema In-naka Hameedum Majeed.

O Allah! Shower Your blessings on Muhammadand his family as You showered Your blessings on Ibrahim (alaihis salaam) and his family. Indeed, You alone are worthy of all praise and are the Glorious.

Al-Laahum-ma Baarik 'Alaa Saiey-yidinaa Muhammadin-Wa 'Alaa Aali Saiey-yidinaa Muhammadin Kamaa Baarakta 'Alaa Ibraaheema Wa 'Alaa Aali Ibraaheema In-nala Hameedum Majeed.

O Allah! Bless Muhammad and his family as You blessed Ibrahim (alaihis salaam) and his family. Indeed, You alone are worthy of all praise and are the Glorious.

Invocation (dua):

Rab-bij'alnee Muqeemas-Salaati Wa Min Zur-reey-yatee, Rab-banaa Wata Qab-bal Dua, Rab-banagh-fir Lee Wa Li Waali daiey-ya wa Lil Mu'mineena Yauma Yaqoomul Hisaab.

O Allah! Make me regular in Namaaz and my family also. O Allah! Grant my invocation. Forgive my parents and all other Mu'mineem on the Day of Judgement.

Or

Al-Laahum-ma In-nee Zalamtu Nafsee Zulman Kaseeran-Wa Laa Yaghfiruz-Zunooba Il-laa Anta Faghfir Lee Maghfirtanm-Min 'Indika War Hamnee In-naka Antal Ghafoorur-Raheem.

O Allah! I have done huge injustice to my soul and undoubtedly none grants forgiveness of sins but You. O Allah! Forgive me with the forgiveness that comes from You, and have mercy on me. Surely, You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.

Salaam

To end the Namaaz, turn your face to the right shoulder and say As-Salaamu 'Alaeikum Wa Rahmatul-Laah- Peace on you and the mercy of Allah. Then turn your face to the left shoulder and say As-Salaamu 'Alaeikum Wa Rahmatul-Laah- Peace on you and the mercy of Allah.

During the salaam, make the intention of saying salaam to the angels.

This will complete your Namaaz.

Dhikr Allah

After every farz Namaaz before dua, Laa Ilaaha Illal Laah- is to be recited three times.

Hazrat Abdullah Ibne Abbas(Radi Allaahu Anhu) narrates, 'In the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad, it was the custom to perform dhikr aloud after the farz congregational Namaaz'. (Bukhari)

Namaaz e Witr

It consists of three rakaats. Intention (niyat) for the Witr Namaaz: 'I intend to pray three rakaats Witr Namaaz, for Allah Ta'ala, facing the direction of Kabah'

'In qa'dah (sitting) after the second rakaat, recite only tashahhud, and then stand up for the third rakaat saying Allaahu Akbar' . Recite Surah Fateha, another surah of The Holy Quran, and then it is waajib to say Takbeer e Qunoot. Takbeer e Qunoot is said the same as Takbeer e Tahreema. While saying Allaahu Akbar, lift your hands up to your ears and then fold the hands beneath your navel and recite Dua e Qunoot:

Al-Laahum-ma In-naa Nasta'eenuka Wa Nastagh firuka Wa Nu'minu Bika' Wa Natawak-kalu 'Alaieka Wa Nusnee 'Alaiekal Khaier, Wa Nash kuruka Wa Laa Nakfuruka wa Nakh La'u Wa Natruku Maien-Yafjuruk, Al-Laahum-ma Liy-yaaka Na'budu Wa Laka Nusal-lee Wa Nasjudu Wa Ilaieka Nas'aa Wa Nahfidu Wa Narjoo Rahmataka Wa Nakh shaa 'Azaabaka In-na 'Azaabaka Bil Kuf-faari Mulhiq.

O Allah! We beseech You for Your help and ask You for Your forgiveness, and believe in You and put our trust in You and we praise You in the best manner and we thank You and we are not ungrateful to You and we cast off and forsake one who disobeys You. O Allah! You alone we worship and to You we pray and make obeisance and to You do we run and we present ourselves for serving You and we hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment. Surely, Your punishment over takes the unbelievers.

If someone is not able to recite Dua e Qunoot, they can recite the supplication:

Rab-banaa Aatinaa Fid-dunyaa Hasanatawn-Wa Fil Aakhirati Hasanatawn- Wa Qinaa 'Azaaban-Naar.'

O Allah! We seek of You good in this world and good in the Hereafter and safety from the torment of Hell.

If someone forgets to recite Dua e Qunoot and goes in ruku, he should not return to it, but should do sajda e sawh.

DUA AFTER FARZ NAMAAZ

In Namaaz where immediately after the farz Namaaz, there is sunnat e muakkadah (Zohr, Magrib and Isha), Prophet Muhammad used to make a very short dua. Prophet used to stand up whilst reciting:

Al-Lahum-ma Antas-Salaam Wa Minkas-Salaam

Tabaarakta Yaa Zal-jalaali wal-ikraam '

O Allah! You are As-Salam (Peace). From You is all peace, blessed are You Possessor of majesty and honour

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)
