FASTING IN THE MONTH OF SHAWWAAL

Six days of fasting in the month of Shawwaal, after the fasting for the month of Ramadhan is sunnah mustahabbah. It is recommended, but not wajib. It has immense rewards. Abu Ayyoob(Radi Allaahu Anhu) narrates that Prophet Muhammad said: “Whoever fasts Ramadhan and follows it with six days of fasting in Shawwaal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime”. Six days of fasting for Shawwaal can begin on 2nd of Shawwaal, because fasting on the Eid day is haraam. The six days of fast can be observed on any time during the month of Shawwaal. It is not necessary to observe these fasts consecutively. However, the sooner one completes it, the better. If a person has missed the fasts of Ramadhan, then, the qadha of those fasts has to be observed first.
